The Sustainability Committee is an umbrella committee to address current and future issues impacting Southwest Harbor. This committee is often required for grant eligibility at the state and federal level.​

Mission: The sustainability committee is a permanent committee to help the Select Board develop programs and policies to make the town and its citizens more resilient in areas related to the environment, health, infrastructure, waterfront, and safety and to help ensure that Southwest Harbor is welcoming for future generations.
 
Structure: The chair, Secretary, and members who will then fill the subcommittee.  Each subcommittee shall have from 3-5 members and report back to the committee. The committee will meet two times a month. 

Below Are The Three Initial Subcommittees 

​​​Solid Waste & Recycling Subcommittee
 Purpose is to explore options for managing solid waste in order to promote equitable, sustainable, environmentally sound, and cost-effective practices through waste reduction, reuse, recycling, innovative technologies, and education.

Vulnerability Assessment Taskforce
Led by Gulf of Maine Research Institute and limited in scope. Scheduled completion of tasks by July 2025) 
Members currently include Chad Terry, Jeff Prentiss, Kulani Granholm, Blake Thieken and Mary Ellen Martel.

Housing Subcommittee
​Purpose is to collect data and explore options for housing in Southwest Harbor to increase housing availability and affordability.
