General Assistance Notice
The municipality of Southwest Harbor administers a General Assistance (GA) Program for all persons who are eligible pursuant to the standards provided in GA ordinance, state law (22 M.R.S. §§ 4301-4326), and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) regulations. Copies of the Municipal Ordinance and General Assistance statutes are available, upon request, for public inspection at the Town Hall-Municipal Office Building. Persons who wish to apply for General Assistance may obtain an application during the regular business hours of Monday-Thursday. Applications are accepted and processed daily during the hours of 7:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Applicants are encouraged to call and schedule an appointment ahead of time by calling 207-244-1507. In the event of a LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCY, occurring outside of normal business hours applicants may contact Police “Dispatch by dialing 207-244-7911. The municipality’s General Assistance administrator must issue a written decision within 24 hours of receiving an application. The Department of Health and Human Services’ toll free number to call with questions regarding the General Assistance Program is 1-800-442-6003.
